Spinalonga
The tour departs from your hotel early in the morning, with a suggested departure time of around 07:00, so that we can make the most of the day and visit some of the most remarkable destinations in eastern Crete.
Our first stop, after approximately one and a half hours of driving, is the beautiful coastal village of Agia Pelagia. At a panoramic café-snack bar you will have approximately 20 minutes to rest, enjoy a coffee or a light snack and admire the view over the picturesque bay and village.
We then continue our journey and, after approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, we arrive at the beautiful coastal village of Elounda. From the port of Elounda you can board a ferry boat that will take you to the historic island of Spinalonga.
Spinalonga is a small island with a great history. In the past it served as a Venetian fortress and later became a place of isolation for leprosy patients for approximately half a century. The remarkable and moving story of the island’s inhabitants became known worldwide through the famous novel The Island, which contributed significantly to raising awareness of the history and cultural significance of the place.
You will have approximately 2 hours to explore the island, walk through the stone alleyways of the old settlement and discover up close the Venetian walls and historic buildings that are preserved to this day.
After completing the visit, we return by the same ferry boat to the village of Elounda and continue towards the beautiful town of Agios Nikolaos. There we will visit the famous Lake Voulismeni, the picturesque lagoon that forms the heart of the town and one of the most photographed destinations in Crete.
Around the lake you will find many cafés, restaurants and shops, where you can enjoy your lunch or a relaxed coffee while taking in the beautiful view. We will spend approximately 2 hours here.
We then begin the return journey, with our next stop in the centre of the city of Heraklion. There you will have approximately 2 hours of free time to explore the commercial centre of the city, visit the Historical Museum of Crete, or enjoy a stroll through the vibrant streets of the city.
After completing our time in Heraklion, we begin the return journey to your hotel. The drive takes approximately 2 hours, bringing to a close a rich day trip full of history, beautiful landscapes and unique experiences from Crete.
